Khajuraho, an obscure village, no more than a clearing in the jungle, now captures world attention for its 22 temples (out of original 85 temples) built by rulers of the Chandela dynasty between 950 to 1050 AD. These temples are a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their beautiful and erotic rock carvings.
The temples of Khajuraho are the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples in India. They strike a perfect balance between architecture and sculpture. The erotic sculptures of the Khajuraho temples are found on the exterior walls of about 10% of the carvings showing sexual activities between people (not deities) and the rest of carvings depict the everyday life activities of the common people when the carvings were made. The interior of the temples do not contain erotic art, nor are there such sculptures near the deities.
The beautiful erotic rock carvings and sculptures of Khajuraho depicting Kama Sutra are unique in the world. These sculptures representing the Indo-Aryan architecture, congeal in stone a lyrical paean to love and passion. They cannot be passed off as just erotic sculptures, the temples have some of the most revered Gods of Hinduism.
Each temple, built of stone, is distinguished by carved spires and walls, where the subjects range from aesthetic depictions of major and minor deities and celestial beings to a variety of erotic sculptures.
The Temple of Kandariya Mahadeva, one of the most accomplished temples of the Western group, is decorated with a profusion of sculptures that are among the greatest masterpieces of Indian art. It comprises eighty-four shikharas, the main one 116 feet from the ground level.
