Spectacular rock cut caves and cave paintings exits at two nearby places - Ajanta & Ellora. The most notable feature of these cave temples is that entire hillsides were cut away with the artisan's chisel to produce some of the world's most exquisite sculpture.
The Ajanta Caves depict the stories of Buddhism spanning from the period from 200 BC and 650 AD. There are 29 caves contain paintings and sculptures depicting major events in the life of the Buddha.
The Ellora Caves have been Carved during 350 A.D. to 700 A.D. There are 34 caves representing elaborate sculptures of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain faiths. They are fascinating and the finest example of cave temple architecture housing elaborate facades and exquisite interiors. The 5 caves to the north are Jain, the 17 in the centre dedicated to Hinduism, and the 12 caves to the south are Buddhist.
